Spoilers: What Are They Good For?

It might seem somewhat counterintuitive that the number one accessory that people love to add to their cars is designed to disrupt the flow of air over the vehicle. But this characteristic is actually the origin of the name of the part. That’s because the spoiler “spoils” the smooth flow of air over the vehicle. One thing you hear a lot from guys who think they know all about cars is that a spoiler is only useful on race cars. This is only partly true. The purpose of the spoiler is to use the downward pressure of the wind force to press the rear of the car downward. This effectively increases the amount of traction and gives the vehicle more purchase on the road. It’s easy to see why this would be useful on a race car, but how about an ordinary vehicle? Despite the insistence of those guys who think they know it all, a spoiler starts to work at around 50 to 60 miles per hour, increasing friction between the road and the rear tires.

Why MOPAR Spoilers are the Best

A spoiler is designed to do the exact opposite of what a wing on an airplane does. The purpose of a wing is to generate lift, while a spoiler is meant to generate downward pressure. This means more energy, generated by the engine and transferred to the wheels, gets used to propel the vehicle forward. That’s why race cars use them. But for ordinary vehicles, going faster isn’t the idea. For the average car, or SUV, a spoiler is a safety item. It’s a great way to get rain water out from between the tires and the road through sheer pressure. That being the case, a spoiler has to be made with precision. It has to cut the exact right angle to generate the right amount of downward pressure. It also has to stand up to stiff wind resistance, since it’s designed to take the brunt of the pressure provided by the air.
