Battery Replacement Service

Your Car Battery 101

Every vehicle with an internal combustion engine requires a battery that stores voltage and sends it to the engine starter as necessary when you want to drive anywhere. The battery also provides the electricity needed to operate the electrical accessories when the engine is not running.

Once the engine turns over, it is the alternator that powers electronics while also sending additional voltage to the battery when its reserve capacity drops too low. Receiving and sending electricity continuously eventually causes the battery to lose integrity.

Your battery will need to be replaced about every two years. But, if your battery is more than a year old and has faced extreme temperature changes, like most of us here in Michigan, it would be a good idea to have your battery tested.

However, if you are already experiencing the warning signs of faulty battery performance, then it is the best decision to have it replaced ASAP.

Battery Service - Visual Inspection & Performance Testing

Battery service begins with a visual inspection and performance test. The visual inspection evaluates the physical condition of the battery including connections and casing.

Poor battery performance can often be traced back to an obvious physical deficit, such as corroded connections or a disfigured case that might also be leaking fluid. If the visual inspection does not reveal any physical problems, then the battery must be tested to confirm that its cold-cranking amps and reserve capacity are at factory specifications.

Our Certified Technician will use a multimeter to check the battery’s voltage to the starter and charging system, as well as its capacity while not discharging. Usually, this is where the Certified Technician confirms that your vehicle has a defective battery and needs a new one. More often than not, it is either not holding adequate voltage in reserve capacity or is not able to send enough electricity to the starter to turn the engine over.
